Odunayo Sanya, the Executive Director of MTN Nigeria Foundation, has built an impressive career across various industries, including education, finance, telecommunications, and social impact. In an interview with PREMIUM TIMES, she shared insights into her leadership journey, challenges, and how she empowers women in the workplace.
From Banking to Leadership at MTN Nigeria Foundation
Sanya’s career began 29 years ago as a Teller at Chartered Bank. Despite studying Political Science, she embraced the financial sector with an open mind, working in banking operations, treasury, marketing, and credit. Over time, she moved to different banks, gaining experience before joining MTN Nigeria in 2005.
Her transition to telecommunications came at a pivotal time—during Nigeria’s banking consolidation. She welcomed the change and embraced new opportunities. In 2019, she joined the MTN Foundation and eventually became its Executive Director. Looking back, she sees this shift as a defining moment in her career.
Women as Leaders and Change Agents
Sanya believes women leaders play a crucial role in organizations. They are natural nurturers and change-makers. By mentoring, sponsoring, and coaching others, women create opportunities and empower future leaders. She emphasizes that leading by example is the most powerful way to inspire.
For Sanya, leadership is about knowing the way, showing the way, and going the way. She encourages women to advocate for policies that support them in the workplace and to use their voices to drive change.
The Unique Strength of Women in Leadership
Sanya highlights that women bring balanced perspectives and strong analytical thinking to leadership roles. Their ability to approach challenges with mental rigor sets them apart. She believes these qualities make women effective decision-makers and valuable assets in any organization.
Overcoming Career Challenges
Throughout her journey, Sanya has faced obstacles, including delays in career progression and doubts from colleagues. However, she has learned to stay focused on the bigger picture and invest in personal development. She credits resilience and continuous learning for helping her navigate challenges.
A Career Highlight: Transforming Healthcare in Nigeria
One of Sanya’s most rewarding moments as Executive Director was leading a major healthcare initiative. Under her leadership, the MTN Foundation revitalized 49 primary healthcare centers across Nigeria. The project included renovations, medical equipment, solar-powered water systems, and staff training. MTN invested N3 billion in this effort, improving healthcare access for underserved communities.
For Sanya, the true reward is knowing that mothers and children now receive better care. The joy and gratitude from community members remind her why leadership and service matter.
Advice for Young Women in Leadership
Sanya encourages young women to believe in themselves and pursue excellence. She reminds them that challenges will arise, but perseverance is key. She advises them to build strong support systems and remain focused on their goals.
Balancing Leadership and Personal Life
Managing work and personal life requires prioritization. Sanya has built a strong support system, including her family, to help balance responsibilities. She outsources household tasks and ensures her children understand their roles. By focusing on what truly matters, she maintains a sense of peace and fulfillment.
Accelerating Action for Women’s Empowerment
Reflecting on this year’s International Women’s Day theme, “Accelerate Action,” Sanya sees it as a call to create opportunities for women and men alike. She believes women must take an active role in shaping the future. Change cannot be outsourced; it requires intentional effort.
Her leadership philosophy is simple: be the change you want to see. By leading with purpose, inspiring others, and taking decisive action, she believes women can drive lasting change in society.
