Tragedy Strikes on Third Mainland Bridge: One Dead, Four Injured in Crash
Earlier today, a heartbreaking accident on Lagos’ bustling Third Mainland Bridge left one person dead and four others injured. The collision involved a J5 Ford bus loaded with pepper and perishable goods and a Mercedes truck. The scene was nothing short of chaotic, but quick action by the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) and other emergency teams helped prevent further casualties.
The Crash That Shook the Morning
According to a statement from Adebayo Taofiq, Director of Public Affairs at LASTMA, the tragic incident unfolded at Ilubirin, heading towards Sura. The J5 Ford bus reportedly suffered a brake failure while speeding, slamming into the Mercedes truck. This unfortunate mechanical failure turned a regular day on Lagos roads into a scene of despair.
Rescue in Action
LASTMA, under the leadership of General Manager Olalekan Bakare-Oki, arrived swiftly to take control. With the help of concerned bystanders, they managed to pull five victims from the wreckage. Among them, four were alive but injured, while one person sadly succumbed to their injuries at the scene.
The survivors were quickly rushed to Lagos Island General Hospital for emergency treatment. Meanwhile, the LASTMA rescue team, supported by the Lasema Response Unit (LRU), Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Nigerian Police, and LASAMBUS, worked tirelessly to clear the wreckage and restore traffic flow on the bridge.
A Sobering Reminder
As we approach the festive season, Mr. Bakare-Oki shared a heartfelt message to drivers, urging them to prioritize safety. He emphasized the importance of regular vehicle maintenance, especially ensuring braking systems are in top condition. His advice couldn’t come at a better time, as heavy traffic and increased road activity often lead to more accidents during the holidays.
Moving Forward
This incident serves as a somber wake-up call for all road users in Lagos. It’s a reminder that one malfunction or misstep can ripple into tragedy. LASTMA reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding Lagos roads and collaborating with other agencies to prevent avoidable accidents.
Let’s all do our part to stay safe on the road. Slow down, maintain your vehicles, and keep an eye out for fellow drivers. Every life matters, and together, we can make our roads safer for everyone.
