They May Soon Lock Us All Up! — Atiku Calls Out Tinubu’s Govt
Atiku Abubakar has thrown serious shade at President Bola Tinubu’s administration, and honestly, he’s not holding back. The former Vice President of Nigeria took to X (formerly Twitter) to blast Tinubu over the prosecution of Omoyele Sowore, the publisher of Sahara Reporters, and the arrest of Prof. Usman Yusuf, a former Executive Secretary of the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS).
According to Atiku, this isn’t just about Sowore and Yusuf; it’s about a dangerous pattern. He believes these actions are part of a bigger plan to silence critics, intimidate the opposition, and set up a one-party rule. And guess what? He’s not alone in this thinking!
What’s the Tea?
Atiku didn’t sugarcoat his words. He straight-up called the charges against Sowore baseless and warned that if things keep going this way, nobody who speaks against the government will be safe. He dropped this bombshell on January 30, 2025, via his official X handle, making it clear that he sees Tinubu’s government as one that’s allergic to criticism.
In his words:
“The arrest and baseless prosecution of @YeleSowore is the latest chapter in this unrelenting campaign. Now, they have seen fit to add Professor Usman Yusuf—an outspoken critic of this administration to their grim roster. At the pace they are going, it seems they may soon find themselves contending with the incarceration of every one of us.”
Whew! If that’s not a mic-drop moment, I don’t know what is.
One-Party Rule?
Atiku didn’t stop there. He doubled down on his claim that Tinubu’s APC is working overtime to crush opposition parties ahead of the 2027 elections. He even accused them of bribing opposition leaders with N50 million to weaken their political structures.
This isn’t the first time Atiku has warned about what he calls a “grand design for a one-party autocracy.” He’s been vocal about it for a while, and now, with these latest arrests, he’s basically saying, “I told y’all this was coming!”
What Now?
The big question is, where does this end? Will critics keep getting locked up? Will Nigeria’s democracy survive this political chokehold? One thing is clear: Atiku is not backing down, and he wants Nigerians to pay attention.
For now, all eyes are on Tinubu’s government. Will they respond to these allegations, or will they stay quiet and let the drama unfold? Either way, Nigerians are watching, and so is the world.
