Steel Minister Calls on Global Donors to Revamp Ajaokuta Steel & More!
The Nigerian steel industry is at a turning point, and I am here to make sure we don’t miss this chance to shine. As the Minister of Steel Development, I had a crucial sit-down with top international agencie UNIDO, UNDP, the Australian High Commission, and others to rally support for revamping the Ajaokuta Steel Company, National Iron Ore Mining Company, and other key assets.
Steel is the backbone of industrial growth. It builds cities, powers infrastructure, and creates jobs. But let’s be real—revamping a capital-heavy industry like steel takes serious financial muscle. That’s why we’re knocking on the doors of global donors for technical and financial backing.
The Big Plan: Revamp, Rebuild, and Revolutionize
We’re not just throwing money at old factories. We have a game plan! Our strategy focuses on:
- Breathing new life into Ajaokuta & NIOMCO – Modernizing these facilities so they can fuel local production and cut down our reliance on steel imports. More local production = more jobs and stronger economic growth.
- Supporting SMEs in metallurgy – We’re rolling out initiatives to help small and medium-sized businesses thrive in the steel industry. Growth should be for everyone!
- Recycling for a sustainable future – Establishing Metallurgical Scrap Collation Centres in all six geopolitical zones to ensure a steady supply of raw materials and promote eco-friendly practices.
- Training the workforce of tomorrow – We’re upgrading the Metallurgical Training Institute in Onitsha, bringing in cutting-edge tools like augmented reality solutions and simulation equipment. The future is tech-driven, and we’re making sure our people are ready!
Why We Need Global Support
Let’s face it—big dreams need big funding and top-tier expertise. That’s why I’m calling on our international partners to step in. Your investment, guidance, and resources can fast-track our steel industry’s transformation. This isn’t just about steel; it’s about Nigeria’s industrial rebirth!
A Win-Win Situation
By partnering with us, global donors won’t just be funding projects; they’ll be part of a movement. A movement that will:
- Boost local production and innovation
- Reduce Nigeria’s dependence on imports
- Open up new job opportunities
- Strengthen trade policies and regulations
- Position Nigeria as a leader in Africa’s steel industry
This is our moment to turn Nigeria’s steel sector into a world-class powerhouse. We’re ready to put in the work, but we can’t do it alone. With the right support, we’ll create a steel industry that drives growth, builds communities, and secures a brighter future for future generations.
