SON Intensifies Efforts to Standardise Made-in-Aba Products
The Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON) has reaffirmed its commitment to enhancing the quality of locally manufactured products, particularly those from Aba, to boost both local and international market acceptance.
SON’s Director of Region (South East), Aharanwa Chuks, disclosed this during an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja. According to him, the agency is strengthening its Mandatory Conformity Assessment Programme (MANCAP) to ensure that all Nigerian-made products align with the Nigerian Industrial Standards (NIS).
Through MANCAP, SON directly engages with manufacturers to verify that their products meet established quality benchmarks. This process involves factory inspections, product sampling, and rigorous testing to ensure compliance. Successful manufacturers receive MANCAP certification, signifying that their products meet required standards.
“In Aba, we have intensified efforts to educate manufacturers on standardisation practices,” Chuks stated. “We are also holding stakeholder meetings, bringing together manufacturers from various industries to provide guidance on producing goods that meet both local and global standards.”
Aba, known for its vibrant manufacturing sector, particularly in leather goods, has been a key focus area for SON. The agency has sensitised leather manufacturers on best practices to enhance the competitiveness of their products in international markets.
“By obtaining MANCAP certification, manufacturers can ensure their products are not only marketable in Nigeria but also competitive globally,” Chuks explained. “This initiative aims to boost consumer confidence and elevate the reputation of Made-in-Aba products worldwide.”
SON has urged all Aba manufacturers to work closely with the agency to secure certification and improve product quality. The organisation remains committed to fostering a culture of excellence in Nigerian manufacturing and ensuring that locally made goods can compete favorably on the global stage.
As the drive for standardisation continues, SON encourages manufacturers to leverage its resources and expertise to enhance product quality, build consumer trust, and expand market reach.
