Skill Development in Focus as FG, US Partner on Transport Sector

The buzz around this partnership grew louder after a strategic meeting in Abuja between Abike Dabiri-Erewa, the CEO of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM), and Dr. Toks Omishakin, Secretary of the California State Transportation Agency (CalSTA). Dabiri-Erewa didn’t mince words when she stressed the importance of investing in training programs to help Nigerians develop the technical skills needed for a top-notch transport system.
According to her, these efforts are directly in line with President Bola Tinubu’s vision of making Nigeria a trillion-dollar economy. But it’s not just about skills. Omishakin highlighted how tackling transport-related pollution is key to achieving sustainability. He explained that adopting green practices will improve air quality and public health, areas California has significant experience in. To make this happen, CalSTA plans to work closely with Nigerian institutions like the University of Lagos to develop advanced training for students.
This partnership also aims to leverage the expertise of the Nigerian diaspora in areas such as infrastructure and economic development. Omishakin mentioned that knowledge transfer and collaboration with small and medium-sized enterprises could be game-changers for Nigeria’s transport sector.
Adding to the conversation, Dr. Aditya Ramji from the Global South Clean Transportation Center stressed the importance of local capacity-building. He explained that new programs will focus on equipping Master’s and PhD students with practical skills to solve Nigeria’s unique transport challenges while promoting climate action.
