Six Civilians Killed in Accident During Nigerian Air Force Operation Against Terrorists in Katsina

In a tragic incident, a Nigerian Air Force airstrike in Katsina State accidentally killed six civilians. The attack was originally intended to target bandits who had previously killed two police officers and four vigilantes. However, the airstrike hit a family of six in Yauni, a community in the Safana Local Government Area, as residents reported.

The airstrike, aimed at eliminating terrorists, was part of an operation launched to thwart an attack by bandits disrupting the local government election in Zakka village. While the mission successfully neutralized many bandits, it also tragically resulted in the deaths of three children, a man, and two women from the same family.

The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has expressed its concern over the accidental killings. Air Force spokesperson, Air Vice Marshal Olusola Akinboyewa, confirmed that the operation targeted bandits hiding in Yauni Hill. These bandits were believed to be responsible for previous attacks on security personnel in the region. However, the reports of civilian casualties have raised serious concerns.

The Chief of the Air Staff, Air Marshal Hasan Abubakar, has ordered a full investigation to understand what went wrong and to ensure accountability. Akinboyewa emphasized that the air force operates under strict rules of engagement and internationally accepted standards. He reassured the public that the NAF is committed to uncovering the truth and taking appropriate action if necessary.

Sadly, this incident is not the first of its kind in Katsina. Residents recalled a similar mishap in July 2022, when a fighter jet mistakenly bombed Kunkunni village, killing two people. Despite these unfortunate events, the NAF remains focused on its mission to protect the nation and its citizens. They have asked for patience as the investigation into this latest airstrike unfolds.

The airstrike in Katsina comes on the heels of another deadly airstrike last year in Zamfara State, where 16 people, including civilians and vigilantes, lost their lives. These incidents highlight the ongoing challenges faced by the Nigerian Air Force in its fight against terrorism while attempting to minimize civilian casualties.

As the investigation progresses, Nigerians are urged to stay calm and allow the NAF to conduct a thorough review of the operation. The air force remains committed to professionalism and accountability in all of its missions.
