Senate Greenlights Emergency Declaration for Rivers State
The Nigerian Senate has approved President Bola Tinubu’s declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State. Senate President Godswill Akpabio announced the decision on Wednesday during a plenary session after a majority of lawmakers supported it through voice votes.
Lawmakers Hold Closed-Door Meeting
Before the approval, senators held a closed-door session that lasted one hour and twenty minutes. During this meeting, they discussed the situation in Rivers State and received a briefing from President Tinubu.
Akpabio explained that the lawmakers reached key resolutions, including the creation of a joint ad-hoc committee made up of members from both chambers of the National Assembly. This committee will oversee the administration of the state throughout the emergency period.
Plans for Conflict Resolution
The Senate also decided to form a panel of respected Nigerians to mediate between the conflicting parties in Rivers State. This effort aims to restore peace while the emergency measures are in place.
According to Akpabio, the Senate’s decision aligns with Rule 1(b) of its Standing Orders and Section 305(2) of the Nigerian Constitution. The approval paves the way for necessary interventions to stabilize the state and resolve ongoing tensions.
Moving Forward
With the emergency rule in effect, attention will now shift to ensuring smooth governance and conflict resolution in Rivers State. The committees set up by the Senate will play a crucial role in managing the situation and finding lasting solutions to the crisis.
