Pro-Wike Lawmakers Speak Out on Tinubu’s Emergency Declaration in Rivers
The Rivers State House of Assembly has placed the blame for the state of emergency on Governor Siminalayi Fubara. President Bola Tinubu’s decision to declare the emergency on Tuesday shocked many, leading to widespread criticism.
Tinubu’s Move and Public Reaction
Tinubu’s declaration came after reports of explosions and vandalized petroleum pipelines linked to political unrest in the state. As part of the decision, the president also suspended Governor Fubara, Deputy Governor Ngozi Odu, and all House of Assembly members for six months.
Many Nigerians, including the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) and the PDP Governors Forum, have condemned the action. Critics argue that suspending elected officials goes against the Nigerian Constitution.
Rivers Assembly Blames Fubara
Despite the backlash, Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, Martin Amaewhule, accused Governor Fubara of being responsible for the crisis. In a message to residents, he claimed that Fubara’s refusal to follow court rulings and his interference in legislative matters led to the current situation.
“The state is in crisis due to the governor’s disregard for the law and failure to govern responsibly,” Amaewhule stated. He also accused Fubara of blocking the Assembly from carrying out its duties, calling his leadership style “despotic and tyrannical.”
Amaewhule is among the 27 lawmakers loyal to FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, while only three lawmakers support Fubara. The political battle between Wike and Fubara has caused divisions within the Assembly, fueling tensions in the state.
Assembly Supports Tinubu’s Decision
Despite opposition to Tinubu’s declaration, the Assembly has pledged to support the president’s decision. Amaewhule urged residents to stay calm as the sole administrator appointed by Tinubu takes charge.
“Mr. President has acted in the best interest of the country. We will cooperate fully with the new administrator to restore order,” he said.
He also called on Rivers residents to support the temporary leadership, promising that the Assembly will assist in ensuring a smooth transition during the emergency period.
