President Tinubu: Governors Are Key to Nigeria’s Development Goals
President Bola Tinubu has stressed the vital role governors play in shaping Nigeria’s progress, calling their leadership essential for achieving economic growth, food security, and nationwide development. Speaking at his Ikoyi residence during a New Year homage from Vice President Kashim Shettima and members of the Nigeria Governors Forum (NGF), Tinubu highlighted how governors hold the reins to drive transformation at the grassroots.
“You are the most important link to Nigeria’s prosperity,” Tinubu told the governors. “The Federal Government only accounts for 30 to 35% of the allocated revenue. The rest comes to you. The agricultural value chain depends on your efforts. You own the land; the responsibility is in your hands.”
Pushing for Unity and Grassroots Progress
President Tinubu emphasized the need for collaboration between federal and state governments to tackle pressing issues like local government autonomy, food production, and currency stability. Dispelling rumors of disagreements, he underscored his commitment to local government development, urging governors to work closely with their communities.
“Let’s drive development at the grassroots together. No one is taking local governments away from you. But we need to collaborate to make Nigeria better,” Tinubu explained.
Agriculture: The Path to Prosperity
The President called on governors to prioritize agriculture as a way to stabilize the economy and strengthen the naira. “We need to grow more and work harder to improve our currency’s standing. Prosperity will come, but it requires everyone’s effort,” he said.
Tinubu also took pride in the ongoing progress across states, commending governors for their achievements. “There’s no state we can’t visit and feel proud of its growth. We’re getting better allocations now. Let me take the heat while you enjoy the rewards. Together, we’ll build a nation we can all celebrate.”
Recognition and Confidence
Reflecting on his presidency, Tinubu expressed confidence in Nigeria’s resilience and leadership. “I’m glad I took this job, and Nigerians trusted me with their mandate. We’re in this together, and I appreciate how far we’ve come,” he said.
The President also celebrated being named ThisDay newspaper’s Man of the Year, calling it a recognition of his administration’s strides.
Kwara State Governor Abdulrahman Abdulrazak echoed the sentiment, praising Tinubu’s policies for driving change. “In agriculture, for instance, there’s been a bumper harvest. Farmers are thriving, and we’re encouraging states to stockpile for the future. The policies are working, and we’ll continue to deepen their impact.”
Road Ahead
The President announced plans to visit Enugu State on January 4, underscoring his commitment to witnessing state-level transformations firsthand. Governors assured Tinubu of their continued support, particularly in enhancing local security and economic stability.
Governor Abdulrazak concluded by highlighting the progress made under Tinubu’s administration. “I’ve achieved more in two years of this term than in my entire first term. The restructuring of the economy is yielding results, and we’re pushing past inflation to deliver for our people.”
Tinubu’s message is clear: with unity and consistent effort, Nigeria is on the path to a brighter future.
