NSCIA Urges Muslims to Watch for New Moon Before Eid Festivities

The Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA), led by the Sultan of Sokoto, Sa’ad Abubakar, has called on Muslims to search for the Shawwal moon on Saturday, 29 Ramadan 1446 AH (March 29, 2025). The sighting will determine the end of Ramadan and the date for Eid al-Fitr.

Importance of Moon Sighting

In a statement signed by the Secretary-General of NSCIA, Is-haq Oloyede, the Council emphasized that moon sighting should follow Islamic guidelines. According to scientific calculations, the moon’s conjunction is expected at 11:58 AM on March 29, but Islamic tradition requires physical sighting. If the crescent is seen, Eid will be on Sunday, March 30. If not, it will be observed on Monday, March 31.

To assist in accurate reporting, NSCIA provided contact details for National Moon-Sighting Committee members who will verify any sightings.

Religious Duties and Community Support

The Council also reminded Muslims about Zakatul Fitr, a mandatory charity for the less privileged. Muslims are urged to distribute this food levy before attending Eid prayers.

Additionally, believers are encouraged to intensify prayers in the final days of Ramadan, seeking peace, security, and prosperity for Nigeria. The Council highlighted the importance of praying for leaders, quoting a Hadith: “Do not curse your leaders; invoke Allah to make them righteous, for their righteousness brings about your well-being” (Sunan At-Tirmidhi, Book 49, Hadith 3299).

Awaiting Official Announcement

NSCIA advised Muslims to wait for an official announcement from the President-General on the night of March 29 regarding the confirmed Eid date. The Council wished all Muslims a blessed Eid in advance.

Eid Mubarak in advance!
