Notorious Lakurawa Leader, Maigemu, Killed in Kebbi – Official Reports
Security forces in Kebbi State have successfully eliminated Maigemu, a notorious leader of the Lakurawa gang. According to a state government official, a combined team of security operatives and local vigilance members carried out the operation on Thursday at Kuncin Baba in Arewa Local Government Area. The location, known for its difficult terrain, became the site of a fierce gun battle that ultimately led to Maigemu’s death.
In an official statement released in Birnin Kebbi on Friday, AbdulRahman Usman-Zagga, the Director of Security in the Cabinet Office, confirmed the news. He emphasized that this operation marks a major victory in the fight against crime in the region.
The operation took place just a week after Governor Nasir Idris visited Bagiza and Rausa Kade communities in Arewa Local Government. During his visit, he offered condolences to residents following the killing of six people by suspected Lakurawa cattle rustlers. The governor had assured the communities of swift security reinforcements and stronger measures to combat criminal activities.
Now, with Maigemu eliminated, the governor’s promise has been fulfilled. Usman-Zagga stated that the criminal’s corpse serves as evidence of the successful operation. He praised Governor Idris for his dedication to security and for consistently providing logistical support to special operations teams.
Residents have been urged to remain vigilant and cooperate with security agencies by reporting any suspicious activities. Strengthening intelligence-sharing efforts is key to maintaining lasting peace in the state.
The Lakurawa gang, a terror group operating in Sokoto and Kebbi states, has long contributed to insecurity in the North-West region. They infiltrated Nigeria through Niger Republic, causing widespread fear and instability. However, with the recent crackdown on their activities, authorities are making progress in restoring safety to affected communities.
