MTN Nigeria Set to Increase Tariffs by 100% on Calls and Data Packages

MTN Nigeria Set to Increase Tariffs by 100% on Calls and Data Packages

MTN Nigeria is asking for a 100% increase on call and data tariffs. During an interview on Arise TV on Thursday, January 2, the CEO of MTN Nigeria, Karl Toriola, confirmed the company has submitted a request to the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) to double prices on calls and data services.

Now, before you panic, Toriola himself is cautious about the chances of this proposal being approved, given Nigeria’s ongoing economic challenges. He admitted that while the company is pushing for the increase, it’s unclear whether the NCC will give the green light, citing the country’s tough financial climate.

“We’ve put forward requests of approximately 100 percent tariff increases to regulators,” Toriola said. “But I doubt they’ll approve such a big jump, considering how sensitive the economy is right now.”

This news comes amidst growing concerns within the Nigerian telecommunications industry. Recently, the Association of Licensed Telecommunications Operators of Nigeria (ALTON) has been vocal about the need for tariff hikes. In fact, ALTON Chairman Gbenga Adebayo has even warned of a possible shutdown if the demands aren’t met. The telecom industry, Adebayo noted, is grappling with soaring operational costs, and without tariff adjustments, they believe it’s unsustainable to keep running smoothly.

But, let’s not ignore the other side of the coin—subscribers are definitely not on board. Many Nigerians are already struggling with inflation and high living expenses, and they’re not thrilled about the possibility of communication costs doubling. One Lagos-based subscriber expressed frustration: “I can barely afford the current rates. Doubling them would make communication services out of reach for many.”

So, where does this leave us? The NCC, which regulates the telecommunications industry, hasn’t responded to the proposal just yet. Industry experts suggest that the body will likely weigh the needs of the operators against the impact on consumers. After all, with public opinion strongly opposed to such a steep hike, the regulator may prioritize the welfare of the people.
