Moon Sighted in Nigeria – Eid-el-Fitr Confirmed for Sunday

The crescent moon marking the beginning of Shawwal 1446 AH has been sighted in Nigeria. The Sultan of Sokoto and President General of the Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA), Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, announced the sighting on Saturday, confirming that Eid-el-Fitr will be observed on Sunday, March 30, 2025.

In a statement, the Sultan congratulated Muslims on successfully completing the Ramadan fast and encouraged them to uphold the virtues of patience, piety, and charity beyond the holy month. He had earlier noted that if the moon had not been sighted, fasting would have continued on Sunday, with Eid being observed on Monday, March 31, 2025. However, with the sighting confirmed, preparations for Eid celebrations are now underway across the country.

Saudi Arabia, home to Islam’s holiest sites, also confirmed the moon sighting, declaring that Eid-al-Fitr will be observed on Sunday. The Saudi Royal Court issued a statement via the official Saudi Press Agency confirming the decision. Similarly, the United Arab Emirates and Qatar have announced Sunday as the first day of the holiday. However, Oman and Shiite-majority Iran have declared that Eid will be marked on Monday, March 31, 2025.

During Ramadan, Muslims worldwide fast from dawn to dusk, refraining from food and drink during daylight hours. The month is regarded as a period of spiritual reflection, prayer, and community togetherness. The end of Ramadan is traditionally celebrated with prayers, feasts, and gatherings with loved ones.

With the official confirmation of Eid-el-Fitr in Nigeria, Muslims across the country are preparing to mark the occasion with prayers, festivities, and charitable acts.

Eid Mubarak to all!
