Lawal to Oversee Inauguration of Governing Councils for Six Zamfara Institutions
Governor Dauda Lawal is set to officially inaugurate the governing councils for six state-owned tertiary institutions in Zamfara on Tuesday, January 28. The event will take place at the Government House in Gusau, marking a key moment in the state’s education reform.
The councils will then participate in an intensive two-day retreat, scheduled for Tuesday and Wednesday. This retreat, designed to orient council members, will be led by a team of expert facilitators, including Professor Lawal Suleiman Bilbis, a former Vice Chancellor of Usmanu Danfodiyo University Sokoto. The goal is to equip members with a deep understanding of their roles, responsibilities, and powers, based on relevant laws and best practices.
According to Abubakar Mohammad Nakwada, Secretary to the Zamfara State Government, the retreat will ensure the smooth functioning of the institutions in line with the governor’s “rescue agenda” for education. This initiative comes after the governing councils were formed in October following recommendations from visitation panels that assessed the conditions of these institutions. It marks a historic step since it’s the first time such a comprehensive process has been undertaken in Zamfara since the state’s creation in 1996.
Governor Lawal’s leadership focuses on transforming education in Zamfara, and this inauguration is a significant move towards that vision. With the establishment of these governing councils, the state aims to improve the management and performance of its tertiary institutions, which remains a top priority for the governor.
