‘I Nearly Gave Up on My 2023 Presidential Bid’ – Tinubu Shares Struggles
President Bola Tinubu has revealed that he almost withdrew from the 2023 presidential race due to overwhelming challenges. Speaking at a special Iftar at the Presidential Villa, he reflected on moments of doubt during his campaign.
Facing Doubts and Challenges
Tinubu recounted a particular incident that nearly made him step away from the race. A close relative visited him at 3:30 a.m., requesting N50,000 to buy food for their uncle. The relative blamed him for the cash scarcity, saying people were struggling to access money because of his campaign.
“He told me, ‘The currency is gone because of you. People are jumping over bank counters because there is no cash. Our uncle, a wealthy man, doesn’t even have N10,000. What are you running for?’” Tinubu recalled.
Despite the discouraging words, Tinubu remained determined. After giving the money, his relative doubted his chances, saying, “I don’t think you will make it.” Tinubu, however, stood firm and responded, “I will make it.”
Later, Tinubu’s uncle confirmed receiving only N10,000 from the relative, who kept the rest. This betrayal shook him, but with support from political allies like Aminu Masari, he stayed in the race.
Making Tough Decisions as President
Tinubu acknowledged that he took office during a difficult economic period. One of his first major decisions was removing the fuel subsidy, a move that sparked immediate backlash.
“On my inauguration day, I made a decision that wasn’t originally in my speech: removing the fuel subsidy. The next day, I faced heavy criticism, but I knew it was necessary for the country’s future,” he said.
Vice President Kashim Shettima praised Tinubu’s leadership, stating that his bold decisions will benefit future administrations. He credited Tinubu with addressing long-standing issues like fuel subsidy fraud, unstable foreign exchange rates, and weak local government structures.
Recognizing Leadership and Impact
Senate President Godswill Akpabio commended Tinubu’s ability to forgive and his innovative approach to governance. He called him “the most audacious president” in Nigeria’s history and highlighted increased federal allocations to state governors under his leadership.
Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu described Tinubu as a leader who uplifts others. He recalled Tinubu’s political support in 2019, despite being from a different region, and said Nigeria needs leaders who rise above tribal divisions.
Imo State Governor Hope Uzodinma also praised Tinubu’s decisive leadership, saying his tough decisions are helping restore confidence in Nigeria’s economy.
A Legacy of Bold Reforms
Minister of Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy, Dr. Bosun Tijjani, shared his personal experience of being appointed by Tinubu despite past activism. He recalled a senior World Bank official describing Tinubu as “the best reformist leader in Africa today.”
Childhood friend Prof. Shaffideen Amuwo reminisced about their early years, emphasizing that Tinubu’s rise to the presidency was guided by fate.
“While I chose the library, my brother chose politics. Today, Allah has shown His greatness by guiding him to lead Nigeria,” he said.
Despite the challenges, Tinubu’s determination, bold decisions, and leadership continue to shape Nigeria’s path forward.
