Governor Yusuf Unveils ₦2.3 Billion Livestock Initiative to Support Women

In a bold move to empower women and fight poverty, Governor Abba Yusuf of Kano State has launched the second phase of a major women empowerment initiative under the Livestock Fattening Programme. The initiative, part of the Kano Agro-Pastoral Development Project (KSADP), is valued at a whopping ₦2.3 billion and aims to promote economic self-reliance for women across the state.

The programme will see livestock distributed to women in all 44 local government areas of Kano. Each beneficiary receives three small goats to start their own livestock businesses. This is an exciting opportunity for women to take charge of their financial future by entering the agricultural sector.

Governor Yusuf emphasized that this initiative is part of his administration’s larger strategy to combat poverty through innovative, inclusive programs. The goal is to empower vulnerable groups, particularly women and youth, to become economically independent, reducing their reliance on government aid.

In this phase alone, 7,158 goats have been distributed to 2,386 women. Looking ahead, the programme will provide even more resources, including 1,342 cows and 1,822 rams, to further support women and youth.

Governor Yusuf stressed the importance of responsibility and accountability in the programme, urging beneficiaries to ensure the livestock is used for its intended purpose. The initiative also aims to improve food security, strengthen rural economies, and create long-term wealth in Kano’s communities.

This is a game-changer for many women in rural areas who are now able to increase their household incomes and contribute to local economic growth. With the support of this programme, they’re not just receiving aid—they’re being given the tools to build their own sustainable livelihoods.

The livestock empowerment programme has already received widespread praise and marks a significant step toward fostering grassroots economic development in Kano State.
