Governor Vows to Oust Monarchs If Unrest Continues in Three Communities

Governor Vows to Oust Monarchs If Unrest Continues in Three Communities

Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke has issued a stern warning to traditional rulers in Ifon, Erin Osun, and Ilobu. He threatened to remove them if violence breaks out again in their communities. This comes after a brief period of peace following deadly clashes that left many dead and properties destroyed.

Governor’s Strong Message

On Monday, Governor Adeleke released a statement through his spokesperson, Olawale Rasheed, cautioning against renewed violence. He revealed that security agencies had received reports of planned attacks by unidentified groups in these troubled areas.

“Even during the Sallah celebrations, I received reports of people planning another conflict in Ifon, Ilobu, and Erin Osun. Security agencies are monitoring the situation closely to prevent any attacks,” the statement read.

To ensure accountability, the governor ordered a swift investigation into key figures involved in the crisis. He reminded traditional rulers that they would bear full responsibility for any unrest in their communities.

“If violence happens again, I will remove the traditional ruler of the affected town. This is not an empty threat. It is time for royal fathers to take control of their communities. Enough is enough,” Adeleke warned.

Possible Return of 24-Hour Curfew

Governor Adeleke also announced that he would reinstate a strict 24-hour curfew if violence resurfaces. Previously, he had reduced the curfew from 24 hours to 17 hours to ease the suffering of innocent residents. However, he made it clear that any attempt to take advantage of this leniency would force him to reimpose full restrictions.

“We relaxed the curfew to ease hardship for innocent people. But if anyone tries to use this as an opportunity to cause chaos, we will bring back the 24-hour curfew,” he warned.

Root of the Conflict

The long-standing land dispute between Ilobu, Ifon Osun, and Erin Osun has fueled ongoing violence. The most recent clashes erupted on March 20, leading to the loss of lives and destruction of homes, fuel stations, and cars. Many residents fled their homes, seeking safety in nearby communities.

During his recent visit to the affected areas, Governor Adeleke expressed deep concern over the level of destruction. He saw firsthand the burnt buildings and the fear gripping the few residents who remained. Reports confirmed that at least three people died in the latest round of violence.

Government’s Response

To prevent further suffering, the governor imposed a curfew on the warring communities. He later relaxed it but kept security forces on high alert. On March 26, he also ordered the immediate setup of three camps to house those displaced by the conflict. This move followed his directive to distribute food and relief materials to affected residents.
