On Sunday, the 15th Emir of Kano, Aminu Ado Bayero, oversaw the renovation of his Mandawari residence as part of preparations for the upcoming Sallah Durbar festival. The durbar, a traditional event marking the end of Ramadan, is a key celebration in Kano’s rich cultural history.
Renovation and Community Engagement
Mr. Ado Bayero moved from the emirate’s mini palace to Mandawari, where he inspected the ongoing restoration work. During his visit, he received warm greetings from residents before returning to the Nasarawa GRA mini palace. The renovation reflects his commitment to preserving heritage while ensuring the residence is ready for the festival.
Tensions are rising in Kano as both Mr. Ado Bayero and his rival, Lamido Sanusi, plan to participate in the durbar. The state government had removed Mr. Ado Bayero last May and reinstated Mr. Sanusi under a revised emirates law. However, Mr. Ado Bayero continues to challenge his removal in court.
Public Support and Festive Preparations
During his visit, residents lined the streets and cheered as he drove past the main emir’s palace, where Mr. Sanusi resides. Later that evening, he attended a special Ramadan iftar hosted by Mandawari community leaders, including former Accountant General of the Federation, Ahmed Idris.
This marks Mr. Ado Bayero’s first return to his Mandawari residence since last year when he unexpectedly arrived in Kano a day after Mr. Sanusi’s reinstatement. Insiders confirmed that he is preparing to lead the durbar procession from Mandawari to Nasarawa GRA mini palace.
Official Approval and Security Measures
On Tuesday, Governor Abba Yusuf directed all emirate councils to begin preparations for the durbar. Following this, Mr. Ado Bayero formally notified security agencies of his plans. In a letter signed by his private secretary, Abdullahi Kwaru, he assured authorities that the celebrations would be peaceful.
The durbar coincides with Mr. Ado Bayero’s fifth anniversary as Emir of Kano. He emphasized the significance of the event, reaffirming his dedication to upholding Kano’s traditions while ensuring order and safety.
The Ongoing Emirship Dispute
The rivalry between Mr. Ado Bayero and Mr. Sanusi has led to both leaders being installed in separate palaces. As Kano prepares for the grand festival, all eyes remain on how the two claimants will navigate this historic celebration.
The upcoming durbar will not only showcase Kano’s vibrant culture but also serve as a moment of reflection on leadership, tradition, and the future of the emirate.
