Edo Killings: Police Apprehend 14 Suspected Perpetrators
Police in Edo State, Nigeria, have arrested 14 people in connection with the brutal lynching of 16 travelers. The victims, reportedly hunters traveling from Rivers State to Kano for Sallah, were attacked by vigilante members and armed youths. The assailants allegedly stopped their truck, dragged them out, and set them on fire after falsely labeling them as kidnappers.
Tragic Incident on the Uromi/Obajana Expressway
The horrifying attack happened on Thursday along the Uromi/Obajana Expressway in Esan North-East Local Government Area of Edo State. The killings have sparked nationwide outrage. Former Kano State Governor Rabiu Kwankwaso and Amnesty International condemned the act. President Bola Tinubu has also ordered an urgent investigation.
Police Response and Arrests
Edo State police spokesperson, Moses Yamu, explained that the suspects claimed they found locally made guns with the travelers, which led them to believe they were criminals. This suspicion escalated into the deadly attack.
Police have since arrested 14 suspects and held an emergency meeting with local leaders. Security forces, including a mobile police unit and tactical teams, have been deployed to the area to prevent further violence.
Call for Peace
Betty Otimenyin, the Edo State Police Commissioner, has urged all groups to maintain peace. She warned against any retaliation or violent gatherings that could worsen tensions. Residents are encouraged to remain calm and cooperate with law enforcement as investigations continue.
