Defamation Charges Dropped by Afe Babalola After Oni Steps In

Afe Babalola, founder of Afe Babalola University (ABUAD), has decided to drop the criminal charges against human rights lawyer Dele Farotimi. This came after a successful mediation effort led by the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, along with other prominent traditional rulers.

Farotimi had previously faced legal action from Babalola after he accused the prominent lawyer of corrupting the Nigerian judiciary in his book Nigeria and its Criminal Justice System. However, the conflict reached a peaceful resolution thanks to the intervention of the Ooni and respected Yoruba leaders.

In a press briefing on Sunday, Babalola expressed his decision to withdraw the charges, emphasizing his respect for Yoruba traditions and institutions. He explained, “From time immemorial, the words of an Oba in Yoruba culture are commands.” Despite his personal views on the accusations, Babalola made it clear that he had no desire to see Farotimi imprisoned. “I have nothing to gain from his imprisonment. I am happiest when I give,” he added.

The Ooni of Ife praised Babalola for his magnanimity and explained the importance of reconciliation in Yoruba culture. “Dele Farotimi is your son. As elders, when our children offend us, we reprimand them but also forgive them,” the Ooni said. He also acknowledged Babalola’s tremendous contributions to both the Yoruba community and Nigeria as a whole.

This move highlights the power of traditional leadership in guiding difficult situations and promoting unity. The intervention of Oba Ogunwusi and his fellow rulers ensured that the issue was resolved amicably, reinforcing the values of forgiveness and respect in the Yoruba culture.
