Bayern’s Fullback Davies Suffers ACL Injury, Ruled Out for Months
Munich, Germany – Bayern Munich has been dealt a major blow as fullback Alphonso Davies is set to miss several months of action due to an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury. The Canadian international sustained the injury in his right knee during Canada’s 2-1 Concacaf Nations League third-place play-off victory over the United States on Sunday. Bayern confirmed on Wednesday that Davies will undergo surgery within the next 24 hours.
Davies, who has been a key figure in Bayern’s lineup with 31 appearances across all competitions this season, now faces a lengthy rehabilitation process. His absence comes at a crucial stage, with Bayern holding a six-point lead in the Bundesliga title race with eight games remaining.
Adding to Bayern’s defensive concerns, French center-back Dayot Upamecano has also been ruled out for several weeks after sustaining a knee injury while on international duty with France.
Bayern sporting director Max Eberl acknowledged the unfortunate timing of the injuries but expressed confidence in the squad’s depth.
“Unfortunately, during international breaks, there’s always the risk that players will return injured – this time, it has hit us particularly hard,” Eberl stated. “Our squad is strong and will compensate for these absences. We will continue pursuing our big goals.”
Davies’ injury has sparked controversy, with his agent, Nedal Huoseh, criticizing Canada’s handling of the player’s fitness. According to Huoseh, Davies was not expected to start the match due to concerns following Canada’s semifinal clash against Mexico. However, head coach Jesse Marsch fielded him in the starting XI, leading to his early injury exit.
“Alphonso was not 100 percent fit after the Mexico game. On Saturday night, the expectation was that he would not be in the XI. As captain, I feel he was pressured to start,” Huoseh remarked. “Canada Soccer needs to do a better job managing these players.”
Since joining Bayern from Vancouver Whitecaps in 2018, Davies has been a vital part of the team, amassing 226 appearances and signing a new five-year contract earlier this year. Despite the setback, Bayern remains optimistic about his recovery, with the club’s world-class medical team overseeing his rehabilitation.
Meanwhile, Upamecano, who has made 147 appearances for Bayern since his 2021 transfer from RB Leipzig, is also expected to begin his recovery process soon.
Despite the injuries, Bayern remains in a strong position at the top of the Bundesliga. The team will need to rely on squad depth and tactical adjustments to maintain their lead in the title race.
Davies’ absence will undoubtedly be felt, but fans and teammates alike will be hoping for a successful surgery and a swift return for the Canadian star.
