Ado Bayero Halts Kano Durbar Plans, Reveals Why
The 15th Emir of Kano, Aminu Ado Bayero, has called off the Sallah Durbar procession he initially planned to mark the end of Ramadan. He made this announcement in a broadcast on Wednesday night, explaining that the decision came after consultations with elders and Islamic clerics who urged him to prioritize peace.
Why the Procession Was Canceled
Ado Bayero emphasized that the cancellation was necessary to maintain harmony in Kano. Earlier, both he and Lamido Sanusi had planned separate Durbar processions, raising concerns about possible conflicts between their supporters.
“I appeal to everyone to understand this decision. Our respected religious leaders and elders advised us to cancel the event, and after discussions with my council members, we agreed,” he stated.
He reassured the people that Durbar celebrations are not more important than peace and unity. “The well-being of our people matters most. We believe suspending the procession will promote peaceful coexistence in Kano,” he added.
A Call for Unity and Reflection
Ado Bayero encouraged citizens to use the festive period to strengthen relationships with family and friends. He expressed hope that everyone would be among those blessed by God in this holy month.
The Ongoing Emirship Dispute
Since May, both Ado Bayero and Sanusi have laid claim to the Kano Emirship. The state government removed Ado Bayero and reinstated Sanusi under a new law, leading to tensions within the emirate.
