INEC Outlines Strategy for Conducting Anambra 2025 Governorship Poll

INEC Outlines Strategy for Conducting Anambra 2025 Governorship Poll

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has assured Nigerians that it is fully prepared to conduct the Anambra governorship election on November 8, 2025. This announcement was made by Queen Agwu, the Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) for Anambra State, during a media briefing in Awka on Wednesday.

According to INEC, the upcoming election is one of the off-cycle polls in Nigeria’s election calendar. In addition to the governorship election, the commission will also organize two bye-elections to fill vacant seats. These include the Anambra South Senate seat, previously held by the late Ifeanyi Ubah, and the Onitsha North State Constituency seat, which became vacant following the tragic killing of Justice Azuka of the Labour Party.

Ms. Agwu emphasized that INEC is fully prepared for all three elections but confirmed that they will take place on different dates. She urged political parties and candidates to follow electoral guidelines and start preparing for the polls by mobilizing supporters and conducting primaries. She also reassured voters that the federal government would provide the necessary funds to ensure a smooth and fair election process.

INEC has been actively working behind the scenes to ensure the elections are credible. Ms. Agwu revealed that the commission has been updating voter records, enhancing its technology, and holding meetings with key stakeholders. She also mentioned the need to recruit more ad-hoc staff and improve logistics, including transportation.

Security remains a top priority, and INEC expects security agencies to perform better than they did in the 2021 elections. Ms. Agwu commended the media for their balanced reporting, which she believes has contributed to peace in the state. She encouraged journalists to continue providing accurate information to prevent misinformation ahead of the elections.
