2027 Elections: Peter Obi Speaks on Progress in PDP, NNPP Merger Discussions
Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s leader and 2023 presidential candidate, has addressed recent rumors about a potential merger with the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) or New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) ahead of the 2027 elections.
During a press briefing on January 2 in Abuja, Obi set the record straight, stating, “There is no merger deal yet with the PDP, NNPP, or any other party. But I urge all patriotic Nigerians to come together in 2027 to rescue our nation from the APC’s poor governance.”
The former Anambra State governor didn’t hold back in criticizing the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), accusing them of corruption, excessive public debt, and mismanagement under President Bola Tinubu’s administration. He pointed to wasteful government spending, particularly on foreign trips, as one of the glaring issues of 2024.
Obi Slams APC’s Governance Style
Obi highlighted the worsening security crisis in the country, condemning the rising cases of banditry, terrorism, and kidnappings. “The loss of lives to preventable crimes is heartbreaking. Nigerians deserve better security and peace,” he said.
Reflecting on his remarkable debut in the 2023 presidential race, Obi reminded Nigerians of his strong showing, where he earned over six million votes, trailing behind Atiku Abubakar of the PDP and Bola Tinubu of the APC. Tinubu secured victory with 8,794,726 votes, while Atiku followed with 6,984,520 votes. Rabiu Kwankwaso of the NNPP finished fourth with 1,496,687 votes.
Interestingly, Obi and Kwankwaso were once PDP members before parting ways due to internal conflicts.
A Call for Unity
With the 2027 elections on the horizon, Obi is rallying opposition parties to join forces and form a strong coalition to challenge the APC’s grip on power. He emphasized the need for unity among Nigerians who are tired of ineffective governance.
Although he dismissed the idea of any finalized merger with the PDP or NNPP, Obi’s message was clear: “It’s time to unite and take back our country.”
As the political landscape heats up, all eyes will be on Obi and other opposition leaders to see how they plan to reshape the future of Nigeria.
